English Philosophy:  In our students, we develop reading and literary analysis skills; we train them in the standard forms of competent, thoughtful, and creative oral and written expression; we stress the development of language as the essential means of expression and communication.


Courses

CP & IND Reading I (Year-long course)

Students may elect to take Reading I, or it may be recommended to them by their teacher or counselor. This course is for the sophomore who would like to improve his reading comprehension, reading rate, study skills, and writing skills. Instruction will focus on reading comprehension and vocabulary-building strategies that help the student read and comprehend content area material more effectively. Instruction will also include test-taking strategies that will help the student be better prepared and more confident when taking standardized tests. Writing instruction will help the student to write with improved organization, clarity, and expression. One Credit

HP Literature of Western Civilization (Year-long course)

Sophomores in the Honors Level are assigned to this course, as determined by the English Department. The course is demanding in terms of reading and writing assignments. Beginning with the earliest literature of the Middle East, this course surveys the finest literature produced by Western authors including poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. Emphasis is placed on the literature of Greece, Italy, Spain, France, Germany, and England. The in-depth reading of texts is also emphasized. One Credit

ACP + CP English II (Year-long course)

English II on both the Advanced College Prep Level & College Prep Level stresses a skills approach to reading, writing, speech, listening, vocabulary study, and research. The reading for the Advanced College Prep Level course is thematic and covers the three genres - poetry, short story, and drama. The literature is American; some traditional, some modern, and some contemporary. The reading text for the College Prep Level course uses high interest materials. The goal of the reading program is to improve the student's ability to understand and interpret. The major thrust of English II on both levels is the writing program, with the main objective of teaching the student to write coherent sentences and well-developed paragraphs. Vocabulary study, listening skills, further research, and public speaking are taught in conjunction with the reading and writing programs. One Credit

HP English American Studies (Year-long course)

This course, taught in conjunction with HP American History, will give the student an opportunity to study major writers, major ideas, and important literary and historical works from the history of the United States. The course will rely on information from HP American History, and will also incorporate art and music in an attempt to give the student a better understanding of the ideas, goals, and philosophies that have governed the country from colony to super-power. One Credit

ACP English III (Year-long course)

This course of studies introduces the students to a heritage of American literature from the earliest writing of native Americans to present day authors. Besides becoming familiar with the important writers of the Americas, students are taught to reflect on and evaluate the lifestyles, expectations, and the ways of thinking of the American culture. The literature is taught not only for its own sake but also as a medium for thinking and evaluating one's own values and experiences. Responding to concepts in the literature, students write frequently and learn to evaluate and refine their writing. One Credit

CP English III (Year-long course)

The CP junior English course introduces the students to a heritage of American literature, the people, the places, and the events. But most importantly, the students will become more aware of the lifestyles and values that motivated people's choices. Frequent comparisons with our everyday concerns and decisions make the literature a relevant study. Students will also write frequently and will learn to evaluate and refine their writing styles, developing clear and effective methods for their written communication. One Credit

HP AP English Literature and Composition

(Year-long course)

This course is an advance placement senior program for Honors Level students to develop their critical insights, to improve their reading and writing skills, and to apply the learned skills to college level literature from the seventeenth century to the present. The student will be prepared through this course to take the Advanced Placement Examination in Literature and Composition, which can earn the student possible college credit. Taking the Advanced Placement Examination, however, is not a requirement of the course itself. One Credit

ACP & CP English IV (Year-long course)

Senior English builds on what the student has learned during the first three years of high school English. The student develops skills in dealing with larger works of literature and with larger writing assignments than he had earlier. We study the novel, the play, poetry, and the essay. The student writes critical and personal essays and two research papers during the year. He is exposed to various speaking situations. In all, he learns how to deal with what others have said, and learns how to express himself clearly in what he writes and what he says. One Credit

ACP Journalism - Newswriting & Reporting (Year-long course)

Journalism Newswriting and Reporting introduces the student to the basics of effective journalistic writing. The student will learn multiple techniques for gathering information and writing informative articles of various types - news, features, sports, and basic concepts of editorial writing. Student will research, interview, write, conference, edit, and revise news copy. Research projects that explore current events, effective journalistic principles and style, and familiarize the student with various types of print media are routine aspects of the course. As students become proficient in the various journalistic writing formats, they will apply their skills in collaboration with the second-year journalism students for the productions of the school newspaper, The Ledger. One Credit

ACP Advanced News Reporting & Production (Year-long course)

While working in collaboration with the students of NewsWriting and Reporting, the Advance New Reporting and Production course challenges the student who has learned the fundamentals of effective journalistic writing to apply those skills and to lead, plan, organize, manage, and produce The Ledger. In addition, these students will report school news creating electronic new distribution system - news web sites and broadcast new reports for distribution to students during homeroom via Channel 1. One Credit
